President Goodluck Jonathan has
placed the designer of Nigerian Flag Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi on a lifetime
salary.

Goodluck Jonathan and Taiwo
Akinkunmi
It was made known today, September
29, by the Special Assistant to the President on New Media, Reno Omokri,
on his Twitter page. See the original message below.
Vanguard recalls that the National
Flag is an adaptation of the winning entry from Taiwo Akinkunmi, also
called Mr Flag Man, in the contest dating back to 1959.
In the original there was a red sun
with the rays on the white stripe. The judges removed the pattern and
the flag has not been changed since.
At the time of the competition,
Akinkunme was a 23-year-old student of Norwich Technical College in
England. He read in the newspaper about the contest for the design of the
National Flag and decided to try his luck.
His variant became the winning one
and was first used in the course of the celebration of the next year’s
Independence Day, October 1.
