The 19th edition of the prestigious
CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards will take place on Saturday,
October 18, 2014 at the Mlimani Convention Centre in Dar es Salaam,
Tanzania.
This was announced by John Ugbe,
Managing Director, MultiChoice Nigeria, who said this year’s
competition, which received entries from 48 countries, including French
and Portuguese- speaking countries on the continent, has 28 finalists
from 10 countries.
He also disclosed that some Nigerian
journalists were nominated for the awards. They include Obinna Emelike
of BusinessDay, Olatunji Ololade of The Nation, Bayo Olupohunda, a
columnist with The Punch, and a joint nominees, Ben Ezeamalu and
Emmanuel Ogala of Premium Times.
According to Ugbe, the Awards represent
the premier accolade for excellence in journalism on the continent. “The
Awards have become the standard for excellence in journalism on the
African continent and it is the reason for which journalists and media
houses on the continent want to be associated with them,” he said.
Over the past 19 years, Ugbe added, the
awards have grown into a genuinely Pan- African event, with many cities
across the continent playing host to the ceremony. This year, CNN and
MultiChoice celebrate their 10th year of partnering on this revered
award.
The competition is once again supported
by the following sponsors— Coca-Cola Company; Ecobank; GE Africa; IPP
Media, Tanzania; Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) and A24 Media.
