‘Confab, a slap on the National Assembly’

A leader of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State, Mr. Akinola Idowu, says the fact that Nigerians had to resort to a National Conference to make key political decisions is an evidence that the National Assembly is weak.

Idowu, who seeks to represent Yewa South/Ipokia Federal Constituency of Ogun State at the lower chamber of the National Assembly, said this in a statement on Monday.

“If the Reps were truly representing their constituencies and had been an effective channel, there wouldn’t have been a need for a National Conference, which in my opinion was an indirect way of passing a vote of no confidence on the House, hence the need for a real and effective change,” he said.

The accountant, who is also a minister at Redeemed Christian Church of God Mercygate Assembly, said Nigeria would have been among the five strongest economies in the world but for bad leadership.

He berated the Peoples Democratic Party for mismanaging the resources of the state for eight years and predicted that the APC would sweep the polls next year.

He said, “It saddens me when countries that are less privileged are better governed with institutions and infrastructures working effectively and efficiently. Nigeria has no excuse whatsoever for not being amongst the first five countries in the world.

“The structure of our political institutions in Nigeria is sadly run by a few that are not interested in the people or their welfare and will do anything to remain in power just for personal gains, and continue to recycle themselves in power to protect their ill-acquired empire. That is why you are hearing the same set of names that were in power 54 years ago still in the corridors of power today.”

Idowu said Nigerians must stop the tradition of collecting bags of rice and money in exchange for votes, saying it prevents quality leaders from emerging.
