Nigeria: How Nigeria Can Be Made Great By Amuka, Fashola

ABUJA--FORMER Head of State, retirerd General Yakubu Gowon, yesterday, tasked politicians in the country to refrain from personal attacks on those in leadership positions, saying what they can do was to argue on administrative policies being adopted.

Gowon equally frowned at those he said, were describing Nigeria as a failed nation, and describing such people as unpatriotic even as he asked them to either get out to live in their chosen nation or remain silent.

Speaking at the 2014 Leadership Annual Conference and Awards Ceremony in Abuja, General Gowon said to politicians: "We should not condemn ourselves in such a manner that outside world will think that we are not good. We must deal with only policies and not individuals. You can help and correct the individual in leadership by ensuring that you give him advice in a way that his person is not important but what he is doing. Is he doing it for the people, is he doing it for the interest of the nation at large?

"That is what I think we need to do. Because when we complain about people calling us all sort of names, where do you think they get it? They get it from us, either from our magazines, or from our newspapers and some times, some of our public speeches.

Public speeches

"What is important is that let all of us love Nigeria Honestly, unless you love and accept your country as a nation, then whatever you do is not worth it and that is what I am going to ask all Nigerians, of all political parties. Let us not say that Nigeria is not a nation, whenever I hear that, it really makes me feel sad and I would say to such people that if Nigeria is not a nation, get out of it and go and choose a nation or live in a nation of your own.

"That is what we must all think and do and make sure that we really look forward to a better country that can satisfy the needs of most people because I can assure you that no one, even within the family, can satisfy everyone within the family. You can do your best, some will accept it, some will reject it but let us love our country, let us accept our country as a nation and put things right. Advice the leadership to do the things that are right and may God give them the wisdom to listen to others, to listen to criticisms and try to put things right for the sake of Nigeria and for the sake of the people."
