The Commissioner for Rural Development, Lagos State, Cornelius Ojelabi, has called on residents of the Badagry Local Government Area to go out to collect their Permanent Voter Cards.
Badagry is one of the nine LGAs in the state where PVCs will be distributed by the Independent National Electoral Commission from 28th to 30th of November.
Ojelabi spoke while inaugurating a road and a community hall in the area.
The commissioner lamented the shoddy way PVCs were distributed in 11 LGAs of the state which he said frustrated the efforts of people to collect the cards.
He urged the residents not to allow anyone to intimidate them.
He said, “Let us meet them on November 28 to 30, to collect our PVCs. Make sure you collect your card that day before you go home. Let us mobilise our people to collect the PVCs. They may want to frustrate you, don’t allow them. That card is what you will use to vote in 2015.”
Ojelabi wondered why INEC did not get it right the first time, adding that what the body was trying to do was to give the Peoples Democratic Party the chance to take over Lagos.
He said in the Ojo LGA, out of the 290 polling units, PVCs were distributed in only 71 polling units, leaving 219 out of the card distribution.
The commissioner also urged those who did not have the card to ensure that they registered when the continuous voters’ registration kicked off.
Ojelabi said it was important for the community to maintain the community hall and road, adding that the Community Development Associations should generate funds to maintain the projects.
The commissioner later distributed farm inputs to farmers at Ese-Ofin Commuity, Otto-Awori Local Council Development Area.
Farm inputs distributed included knapsack sprayers, cutlasses, shovels, wheelbarrows, vitamin enriched cassava cuttings and two plots of land.
Residents and leaders in Badagry that benefitted from the projects commended the government for giving them the dividends of democracy.
