Lagos plans improved health care system

The Lagos State Government says it aims to make the health care sector in the state one of the best in the country.

It added that issues militating against effective functioning of the system, such as the provision of adequate medical equipment, would continue to receive the attention of government.

The Chairman, Health Service Commission, Dr. Wunmi Salako, said this during a two-day leadership retreat for senior hospital management staff, including medical directors, senior nurses and heads of administration, a statement said on Tuesday.

Salako said the government was particular about periodic trainings of its work force in modern day medical practice to aid the overall health care system.

He said, “This is why the yearly retreat is important to brainstorm on how to effectively upturn medical services to Lagosians, while also directing the focus of the government to issues that would aid the overall health care system.”

The Permanent Secretary, Heath Service Commission, Dr. Ahmid Balogun, said the government was building the capacity of its workforce by sending some health personnel for different trainings outside the country.

He urged the medical personnel to be committed in the discharge of their duties, promising that their welfare would continue to receive boost from the government.

Participants at the retreat pleaded with the government to extend the Independent Power Project initiative, presently in use in some hospitals on the Lagos Island, to as many hospitals as possible in order to find a lasting solution to the issue of epileptic power supply in most government hospitals.
