Premium car manufacturer, Porsche, may be eyeing the leadership of luxury sport utility vehicles in Nigeria as it has rolled out the new generation of the Cayenne in Lagos.
The Cayenne, now in its second generation, has been redesigned to offer better handling, comfort and more space for riders, including a family.
Porsche says the new Cayenne features redeveloped engines which deliver higher torque than their predecessors.
Porsche has also enhanced the fuel efficiency of the new Cayenne to continue its ethos of delivering increased power without compromising efficiency.
The automaker says the car represents a new sport SUV, which is meant to be another chapter in the Porsche’s legacy of breaking new automotive ground.
According to the Brand Manager, Porsche Centre Lagos, a subsidiary of Stallion Motors Limited, Mr. Anurag Shah, the new Cayenne has been built with outstanding characteristics.
He spoke in Lagos at a media launch of the vehicle on Tuesday.
He said, “The new Porsche Cayenne embodies the ultimate Porsche traits; class-leading performance and outstanding driveability.
“No matter the road conditions, the new Cayenne delivers a unique automotive experience and we expect our local customers to share in the excitement around this thrilling evolution.”
Options
The vehicle is available in three variants – Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo, and for the first time, the Cayenne S E-Hybrid, the first plug-in hybrid in the premium SUV segment.
Exterior
Porsche has given the Cayenne a sharper design with precise lines and purposefully placed light refracting edges with front body, front wings, bonnet and air blades which are all newly shaped.
Shah said, “At first glance, the new Cayenne is a Porsche through and through with its bi-xenon headlights and four-point LED daytime running lights.”
The new layout of the model’s rear lights creates a three-dimensional effect with the brake lights designed in four elements.
The licence plate, boot handle and lights are now integrated more elegantly into the boot lid.
He said the newly developed exhaust tailpipes were now incorporated in the lower rear section, while an automatically activating boot lid was fitted as standard.
Interior
Like the rest of the Porsche range, the Cayenne benefits from a great interior that is put together with beautifully made switches and a raised cockpit-style dashboard that is inspired by the Porsche Panamera saloon.
The rear seating system is even more comfortable, with optional seat ventilation now available for the first time.
Its first-class driver-focused layout wraps around you, giving the cabin a sports car feel.
The quality of its materials is also adjudged to be peerless.
Performance
The new Cayenne delivers a pioneering benchmark whether being driven through the city, in challenging off-road conditions or in the ultimate test on the race track.
According to the manufacturer, the Porsche Cayenne feels more like a sports car than an SUV.
“While on the move, the feeling continues with impressive straight-line performance with lots of grips and composure through the bends,” it stated.
Body control is good especially on the optional air suspension and with plenty of grips, yet the Porsche is almost relaxing and refined.
It said, “Opt for the V8 Turbo and you’ll accelerate faster than many of Porsche sports cars. And should you choose to take your Cayenne off-road, you’ll be astounded at how capable it is. The hill descent control and locking differentials is adept at crossing vey harsh terrain.”
Engine
Leading the model field is the compelling Cayenne Turbo, powered by a 4.8-litre bi-turbo V8 engine that produces 520 hp at 6,000 rpm and 750 Newton metres of torque from 2,250 to 4,000 rpm.
With its standard eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission, the Cayenne S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds (5.4 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package) – 0.4 seconds faster than the previous Cayenne S. The vehicle’s top speed is 259 km/h.
The three-litre V6 supercharged engine (333 hp) and the electric motor (95 hp) produce a combined system power of 416 hp at 5,500 rpm and a total system torque of 590 Newton metres from 1,250 to 4,000 rpm.
The maximum speed in all-electric mode is 125 km/h. The traction battery can be charged from the electric power grid or while driving.
The biturbo V6 develops a maximum power of 420 hp at 6,000 rpm – a gain of 20 hp. The car’s torque of 550 Newton metres is available from 1,350 to 4,500 rpm.
The power density per litre of displacement is now 117 hp, a gain of almost 40 per cent.
Safety
All models come with six airbags, Porsche Active Stability Management and parking sensors.
The Cayenne is also equipped with a good range of safety kit as standard and there are raft options.
