Environmentalist calls for scrapping of NOSDRA

A WARRI based environmentalist and activist, Eyitemi Brown-Dibofun, has called for the immediate scrapping of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA).

NOSDRA is the agency responsible for attending to issues bothering on oil spillage. Brown-Dibofun called for its scrapping for allegedly conniving with officials of NPDC, a subsidiary of the NNPC, to short-change oil impacted communities in the Niger Delta region.

He also accused the agency of connivance, corruption, incompetence, ineptitude and engaging in divide and rule tactics in impacted communities to arm-twist them in other to coerce them into agreeing to polluters’ terms of settlement of claims.

In an interview with Daily Independent in Warri, at the weekend, Brown-Dibofun expressed dismay that the spill that occurred in Ikara community in Edo State from a point on the NPDC pipelines on February 18, 2014 running into over 2000 barrels of crude was estimated by NOSDRA to be just 40 barrels .
