As part of the centenary celebrations, the National Health Insurance Scheme
(NHIS) has introduced heart surgery, knee replacement and other services that
were hitherto on the exclusion lists in its packages.
This is in an effort to reward the enrollees of the scheme who had remained
loyal to the programme over the years despite the daunting challenges faced by
the scheme in its initial years.
The Executive Secretary of the NHIS, Femi Thomas, disclosed while responding to
questions from journalists in Abuja, on Friday that in an effort to take the
scheme to the nook and crannies of the country, the NHIS has concluded plans to
introduce the community-based Health Insurance Scheme (CBHIS) in 108 local
governments in the 36 states of the federation. This will be done in three local
governments in each state.
On the introduction of heart surgery and knee replacement packages, Thomas
said: “It is in effect now, we are already doing that. Some of the things that
have been on the exclusion list, we are introducing them this year as part of
the centenary celebrations.
