12 feared dead in renewed Plateau attack

Twelve  Berom natives of Bachit district, Riyom Local Government Council, Plateau State, were reportedly killed early Friday in attack by persons suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

Saturday  Independent  gathered that  four villages in Bachit district  were attacked simultaneously at about 1am on Friday, with the attackers killing residents and burning houses in the locality.

Eyewitnesses told Saturday Independent that  over 500 people were displaced as a result of the attack that mostly affected women and children, while many have fled the communities for fear of more attacks.

However, Majority Leader and member representing Riyom Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Daniel Dem, who confirmed the attack, told newsmen that nine people were killed in simultaneous attacks carried out by Fulani herdsmen in Riyom Local Government Area.

He said though normalcy has been restored as a result of intervention of the Special Task Force, he called for adequate security measures in the affected communities to enable the villagers continue with their normal activities.

Dem also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assist the victims with relief materials to cushion the effects of the attack.

Spokesman for the Special Task Force, Captain Iwehe Ikedichi , confirmed that there was an attack in Riyom, adding that he was yet to be given the details of the attack.
