A high-profile crisis may be brewing in the North-West Peoples Democratic Party as some of the party’s governorship aspirants from the zone have alleged favouritism at the screening exercise held in Kaduna on Saturday.
A cross section of the governorship aspirants from the zone protested what they described as irregularities in the party’s screening exercise for the zone.
They claimed that the governors from the zone had perfected plan to impose their so-called anointed candidates.
They said,”It is no longer a hidden fact that the governors have designed and are perfecting an imposition agenda by anointing unpopular candidates specifically in Jigawa, Katsina and Kebbi states.”
A former Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Ibrahim Aliyu, led 20 others including, Senator Ibrahim Idah from Katsina State; a former Minister of Aviation, Felix Hyat from Kaduna State; and Abba Adamu from Jigawa State.
Though some of them were cleared to participate in the party’s primary, they insisted that the exercise was a mere ‘show’ designed to go nowhere.
In Kaduna State, Governor Mukhtar Yero, a former Minister of Aviation, Hassan Hyat; and a former Secretary to the State Government in Kaduna, Alhaji Samaila Abdullahi, were screened and cleared by the screening committee.
However, they(Hyat and Abdullahi) still participated in the protest, claiming that the exercise was skewed to favour the governors from the zone to pick their favourites ahead of the 2015 governorship poll.
They called on the national leadership of the party to stop the current move by the governors to hijack the process, noting that the development could lead to the failure of the party in the zone in 2015.
He said, “Much as it pains us to point this out, nonetheless, we have to say that the party’s faithful and indeed all the other sympathisers view this as a calculated attempt to frustrate and deliberately compromise the bright chances of success in the 2015 general elections.
“It is our earnest belief that flag bearers of the party at all levels should emerge through clear and transparent process in accordance with the provisions of the party’s constitution, rules, regulations and guidelines.
