Wife of Kwara State Governor, Mrs. Omolewa Ahmed and he founder, Knowledge Platform and Skill Development Institute, Justice Mustapha Akanbi, have called for greater public-private partnership to develop the skills and empower Nigerians, especially the youth and women.
Speaking at an empowerment summit in Afon, Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State on Monday, Ahmed said the state government had embarked on empowerment of the residents as one of the strategies to address unemployment in the state and the country at large.
She stated that if people were self-sustainable, their dependence on government jobs would be reduced.
“In two weeks’ time, we will be graduating some students that finished from the Kwara State Ministry of Women Affairs Vocational Training Institute. We will empower them. When we are self-sustainable then our dependence on the government will greatly reduce.”
She called on corporate organisations and wealthy individuals to invest more in employment generation drives.
Akanbi, a former President of the Court of Appeal, speaking during the inauguration of the institute in honour of her late wife, Aduke, said people should emulate her late wife who was actively involved in vocational skills and livestock production as well as snail production in her lifetime.
According to him, skill acquisition will make people become employers of labour.
He stated that the centre was set up to train young people in skill development.
He added that the centre would also organise lectures that would enlighten people on the essence and modalities for self-development.
Akanbi decried the high level of youth unemployment in the country.
He called on the private sector to invest more in projects that would create more employment opportunities for the jobless people as well as invest in the training of people in vocational skills and entrepreneurship development
